Glaciers in summer

Although they may look rigid and immobile, glaciers are huge, slowly moving streams of ice found at high altitudes in the Alps. In Tirol, we have around 620 glaciers, accounting for more than two-thirds of Austria’s total glacier area. Here you can find out more about these ice giants in summer.

3 Facts about Glaciers in Tirol

  • Largest share in Austria

With its 620 glaciers, Tirol accounts for around 69 per cent of the total glacier area in Austria.

  • Sharp decline

Glacier cover is declining dramatically. Projections show that the Alps will be largely ice-free by the end of the century.

  • Use in tourism

Over 86 per cent of Tirol’s glacier areas are completely undeveloped and protected. Only around 2.2 per cent are used for ski runs.

Glacier crevasses

Did you know?

Glacier crevasses are among the most fascinating, but also the most dangerous, phenomena found in high mountains. They form because the ice on the surface is rigid, whilst the glacier beneath it is flowing. Where the glacier curves, slopes down or rubs against rock, the ice comes under strain and cracks open. In the Alps, crevasses are usually between 15 and 30 metres deep.

Storytime

We got really close to the Glacier Ski Resort here.

  • From good source

On the Isel Trail, you can hike along the wild mountain stream from its mouth right up to its source at the Glacier Ski Resort. Our author hiked up there with his family.

  • Roman from the ice

Deep beneath the Hintertux Glacier lies a system of ice caves. This fascinating underground complex was discovered by chance by local cave expert Roman Erler.
