Did you know?
Glacier crevasses are among the most fascinating, but also the most dangerous, phenomena found in high mountains. They form because the ice on the surface is rigid, whilst the glacier beneath it is flowing. Where the glacier curves, slopes down or rubs against rock, the ice comes under strain and cracks open. In the Alps, crevasses are usually between 15 and 30 metres deep.
