The ski season in the five Tyrolean glacier ski areas usually lasts from October to May. In Sölden and Pitztal, glacier skiing is even possible from as early as September. The only year-round ski area in Austria is the Hintertux Glacier - here you can ski 365 days a year and live out your passion to the full.
Winter sports 365 days a year - only on the Hintertux Glacier. Austria's only year-round ski area is located at the upper end of the Zillertal. You can count on the finest powder around the 3,476-metre-high Olperer well into spring. Even in the height of summer, when the heatwave rolls down into the valley, passionate winter sports fans can make their turns in the snow up here.
The weather on the glacier can be extremely changeable. You should therefore regularly check the weather forecasts and warnings. In poor visibility, you can quickly get lost in treeless terrain. Pay particular attention to warm, weatherproof clothing and effective sun protection when glacier skiing. This way, you will always be well equipped in the event of a sudden change in the weather. Also bear in mind the high alpine dangers when skiing on the glacier: Crevasses and ice pose a risk of injury that should not be underestimated. You should therefore avoid open ski terrain, especially at the start of the ski season. A fall into a crevasse can have serious consequences. If you feel unsafe, it is better to take a mountain guide or stay in the secured piste area. Also good to know: The thin mountain air on the glacier can quickly make you tired. So make sure you take regular breaks.
