With towering peaks on all sides, Innsbruck is dominated by mountain sports. A funicular links the historic old town of Innsbruck with the Nordkette Ski Resort, whilst there are ski resorts on all sides of the city, including the Olympic Mountain of Patscherkofel, Rangger Köpfl, Mutterer Almbahnen and Axamer Lizum and the country’s highest-lying winter sports resort of Kühtai. Moreover, Innsbruck gave name to the “Innsbruck Olympic SkiWorld”, comprising nine ski areas with 250 kilometers of trails that are served by more than 80 ski lifts. There can be few more Alpine dominated places in the world and Innsbruck is rightly known as the capital and heart of the Alps.
