Description

The efforts to build a church in Erpfendorf, which have existed since 1914, were successful after World War II: From 1954 to 1957, the church dedicated to Saint Barbara was built according to the plans of Professor Clemens Holzmeister.

The nave with the deeply sloping roof and the chancel tower harmoniously blends into the landscape.

The interior of the large hall is dominated by the crucifixion group at the chancel arch, which was carved in 1957 by Sepp Baumgartner from Schwaz. In the same year, Richard Kurt Fischer from Innsbruck created the apse mosaic on the theme of the apocalyptic lamb and the heavenly Jerusalem. In 1975, the mosaic of the church patroness followed on the rear wall.

The side altar, consisting of seven panels, depicts seven scenes from the Old Testament:
- Creation of sea creatures and birds
- Let there be light
- Creation of Eve
- Temptation of Adam and Eve by the serpent
- Expulsion from Paradise
- Creation of the celestial bodies
- God's spirit hovered over the water

The Stations of the Cross appear like icons in their dense, gold-ground painted compositions. The Marian wing altar shows, alongside the Madonna with child flanked by angels, on the left wing the birth of Mary and on the right wing the meeting of Mary with Elizabeth, with the outer sides of the two wings depicting the Annunciation to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel.
