Attraction Kirchanger Chapel

Kirchberg in Tirol

According to legend, the Kirchanger Chapel was built after an innkeeper had an encounter with a white devil. Out of gratitude for his salvation, he had the chapel constructed.

Description

The Kirchanger Chapel is based on a traditional legend that recounts the origin of the pilgrimage chapel. According to this, a tavern keeper from Kirchberg, known as Hienersbichler, encountered a frightening apparition at Kirchanger: a white devil in human form. This being reproached him for his debauched lifestyle and attempted to drag him into hell. In his desperate situation, the innkeeper vowed to change his life and to build a chapel for the Mother of God if he were saved. With newfound strength, he was able to defeat the apparition, which then vanished. In gratitude, the repentant innkeeper soon had the Kirchanger Chapel constructed and installed a wooden white devil inside as a memorial.
