Today, we sometimes feel like the first people to pass through here again after many centuries. The borderland between Tyrol and Bavaria is so lonely and wildly romantic. The Eppzirler Alm is almost kitschy in its beauty - a refreshment stop is in order - the days are long in summer and the way to Leutasch is still long.
Difficult, long stage on black mountain paths. Sure-footedness is essential. It is sometimes very steeply uphill and over scree cirques and steeply downhill in serpentines. Rocky passages await in places, which should not be underestimated in wet conditions. Also demanding in terms of fitness.
Route description: At the Solsteinhaus, follow the signs for "Eppzirler Scharte" or "Eppzirler Alm". First take the marked path up through the alpine pasture area of the Erlalm. The trail then leads through scree and rocks to the start of the Schuttkar, up to the Eppzirler Scharte. On the ascent through the cirque, the trail divides - here to the right towards "Eppzirler Scharte" (No. 212) and steeply, but on a good path to the saddle between Kuhlochspitze and Erlspitze. On the other side, descend through the steep and later very wide scree cirque (Kuhloch), also on a good path and partly in serpentines. At around 1700 meters, the trail dives into green alpine pastures. This is followed by another short steep section (scree) before the route finally reaches the alpine pasture.
It then descends gently and finally runs parallel to the (dried up) stream bed out to the Eppzirler Alm. From the alpine pasture on the wide road in the pasture area, gently downhill and always through the Eppzirler Tal valley in a constant direction outwards. Pass the turn-off to the Oberbrunnalm (turn-off at 1,200 meters) and continue gently descending out of the valley. The trail now leads along the Giesenbach (alternately to the left and right of the stream) and into the - initially still wooded - Giesenbachklamm gorge. The gorge becomes increasingly rocky. The path finally leads to the parking lot for the Eppzirler Alm in the Scharnitz district of Giesenbach. Then cross the track and the main road, take the first right in the settlement towards "Scharnitz", then left towards "Hoher Sattel".
Later head towards "Bogenschiesstand" or "Scharnitz", then turn left towards "Leutasch" and soon take the forest path "Leutasch über Hohen Sattel" on the right. After this short flat section in Giesenbach, the forest path leads up a moderately steep incline and then gently up through the sparse mixed forest through the Sattelklamm gorge. From the end of the path, a path runs along the slope in the sparse forest and (in the middle section) is quite steep. The trail leads into a path - continue in the same direction to the Hoher Sattel, always following the signs for "Leutasch/Ahrn". Beyond the saddle on a wide forest path in the sparse forest (sometimes quite steep) through the Satteltal down to Leutasch/Ahrn to the bridge over the Leutascher Ache (do not turn left immediately before your destination).
