Beschreibung

Remote self-catering shelter near the glacier
German Alpine Club, Essen Division

Remote, idyllic and full of rushing streams and waterfalls, the Umbaltal Valley has been shaped over millions of years by the power of nature. Water rushes from a glacier at the end of the valley, which was first made accessible to visitors at the end of the 19th century. The Kleine-Philipp-Reuter-Hütte is perched on a rocky outcrop towards the end of the valley, where it was built on the ruins of the abandoned Neue Essener Hütte. It is a basic alpine shelter sleeping 10 people and with a cooking area and an outdoor toilet. Food must be brought by visitors themselves. Most of the hiking and climbing is for experts only, with glacier equipment often required. More information on hiking and climbing in the area is available at the Clarahütte hut.
