Ellbögen lies at 1,070m altitude at the foot of the Patscherkofel mountain overlooking Innsbruck. Despite the high elevation, Ellbögen's residents enjoy a relatively mild climate thanks to its sunny location and the warm Föhn wind.
Ellbögen is situated just 12 kilometres from the regional capital Innsbruck, on the eastern slopes of the Wipptal Valley. It is the ideal starting point for outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking in summer. Hikes up onto some of the valley's most iconic mountains such as the Viggarspitze, Morgenkofel, Kreuzspitze and Rosenjoch offer majestic views of the surrounding region. In winter Ellbögen is a popular starting point for ski tours up to the the Meißnerhaus, Ochsenalm and Arztaler Alm huts. Toboggan enthusiasts will enjoy the 5km toboggan run close to the village, while those who wish to venture a little further afield will find plenty of events, museums, leisure centres and shops in the Wipptal Valley and Innsbruck.
