Snowshoeing & Winter Walking in the Kitzbühel Alps

Hiking in the wintertime through evergreen forests draped in a fresh blanket of white, glittering snow is a terrific way to experience the natural beauty of the Kitzbühel Alps.

A snowshoeing adventure gives the opportunity to take a break from skiing in Kitzbühel. Take in the stunning winter scenery from one of the many winter walks along the 400-kilometer system of trails that are cleared and designated for winter walking—winding around open meadows, through thick pine forests, and past gurgling creeks. Trained naturalists will accompany you on guided tours and share their knowledge about the area’s hidden treasures, such as Windau Valley near Westendorf, Kelchsau near Hopfgarten, Kaiserbach Valley near Kirchdorf, Pillersee in St. Ulrich am Pillersee, Angerberg and Mariastein. Embrace winter’s romance with a horse-drawn dinner sleigh ride or light up the night as you walk through winter wonderland with torches in hand. Warm up, fuel up, and socialize in a rustic lodge afterwards. Kitzbühel Alps is where all your wintertime fantasies will be fulfilled.

The moon takes on a different quality in the serene winter air, so this is a trek you won’t want to pass up. For those who might not feel comfortable taking a nighttime hike on their own, there is the option of taking a guided Full Moon Walk on winter nights when there is a full moon.

Recommended Experience – Brixental Valley: One of the highlights in Brixental Valley is the relaxed winter walk with schnapps tasting on a mountain farm. Trailhead is in the valley where the easy walk begins without snowshoes. Ride the gondola to the top of Choralpe, from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of the glorious mountain scenery. Another gondola ride and a short walk bring you to a mountain farm where you will be introduced to the secrets of distilling schnapps.

Recommended Experience - St. Johann: Bagging a peak in the wintertime without skis? St. Johann offers some truly amazing and unique places and activities to explore, away from the hustle and bustle of people. Such as the “Cheese-Summit Cross-Koasa” snowshoe tour in St. Johann, for example. First, visit “Wilder Käser” Cheese Dairy that creates fine-quality artisan cheeses to pick-up your delicious bag lunch for the trip. Join an experienced guide on this amazing snowshoe tour through the pristine Alpine setting of Wilder Kaiser Range (lovingly dubbed “Koasa”), taking you to the cross atop the summit of Sprisslerkreuz. This is the place where your lunch bag, filled with mouth-watering, locally sourced produce, tastes just right after the exertion of the walk. Gorgeous vistas included.

Recommended Experience – Pillerseetal Valley: Enjoy an unforgettable day hiking with llamas in the mountains surrounding Pillerseetal Valley: Llamas are fascinating and gentle creatures with great curiosity and sense of adventure.
