Alpine-Urban Living: City Breaks in Innsbruck

Small city and bustling metropolis, urban meeting point for people from around the world and basecamp for trips into the high mountains – the regional capital Innsbruck is a harmony of contrasts and the ideal place for a city break.

Why is Innsbruck so loved by locals and visitors alike? The answer is simple: because it has a little bit of everything, yet it is small enough to be explored in just a few days. From the medieval oldtown with its boutiques and cafés to the trendy Wiltener Platzl with its modern eateries, the regional capital of Tirol really is the ideal city to discover on foot. What's more, it is just a 20-minute ride on the funicular and cable car from the heart of the city up into the high mountains at over 2,200m. Little wonder that the Nordkette mountains to the north of Innsbruck are a favourite outdoor playground among locals. Adrenaline junkies can take on the infamous Nordkette Singletrack on downhill mountainbikes, while families have the chance to see learn about animals native to the Alps at the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo. The Nordkette mountains are also a great place for walks and hikes for all ages and abilities, with plenty of traditional huts serving excellent local food.
