With its palm trees and flowers in bloom, the old-town in Lienz has a touch of Mediterranean flair during the warm summer months. Indeed, from here it is only a short drive over the border to Italy. Lienz is the cultural, economic and social centre of East Tirol and offers much to see and do. One of the most popular attractions is Schloss Bruck, a castle built over 750 years ago that was once home to nobility and is today a museum and exhibition space. Works on display include a number by the local painters Albin Egger-Lienz and Franz Defregger. Just a short walk north from the railway station is the magnificent old-town with the impressive Liebburg, Antoniuskirchl and Fransziskanerkloster buildings as well as a selection of cafés, shops, boutiques and handicraft businesses.
