Deeply rooted in tradition, the grand cattle drive in Hopfgarten and Kelchsau is a wonderful festival celebrated with local music, Tirolean delicacies and finest, homemade schnapps, kicked-off one week earlier with the Brixen Alm Fest.
The Brixen Alm Fest is one of the biggest cattle drives in scenic Hohe Salve Region. This year, the homecoming of the cattle in Brixen im Thale takes place on September 19, 2020 at 10:00am with a farmer’s and crafts market, live music and entertainment for little ones. One week later, the Region plays host to another wonderful festival: The Cattle Drive in Hopfgarten and Kelchsau actually begins the day before with a genuine Tirolean Evening and lively music, including the inimitable thigh slapping and lederhosen-wearing “Schuhplattler” dancers. The Tirolean Evening takes place on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the Salvena Event Center by 8:30pm.
The grand cattle drive and associated festival takes place on Saturday, September 26, 2020. The small village of Hopfgarten and its original village center provides the perfect backdrop for the farmer’s market and cattle drive. Traditional crafts and Tirolean delicacies turn this day into a truly remarkable event. Most of the cattle have to be herded even further down the valley to their home farms in Hopfgarten and Itter. Hundreds of cows are therefore herded through Hopfgarten Market, where they are welcomed to cheers and whoops. Locally sourced produce and mouth-watering Tirolean specialties are available from the farmer’s market as of 09:00am. Craftsmen that strive to maintain their traditional working practices stand by ready to share a few tricks of the trade with visitors.
