Krampus and Saint Nicholas processions in Kundl

Kundl, 05.12.2019

Each year on 5 December the village of Kundl in the Inn Valley celebrates the arrival of Saint Nicholas and his devilsh companions with a wild parade through the streets.

The celebrations begin with the arrival of Saint Nicholas, who traditionally brings presents to children who have behaved well during the year. He arrives in the village at 17:30 and hands out presents to children there. Half an hour later, at 18:00, it is the turn of the Krampuses. Their loud and wild parade lasts four hours and is headed by a group of witches as they make their way through Kundl. Musical accompaniment is provided by drums and bells. The next generations of Krampuses is also present in the form of "mini devils" dressed up in their own animal hides and carved wooden masks.
