Wasserweg Gschnitztal Bike Ride

This ride is perfect for families with children who enjoy cycling. It begins in the small town of Steinach am Brenner and leads through the Gschnitztal Valley along a route forming the shape of two water droplets. Along the way there are plenty of interesting information boards as well as fun and games all about water in its many fascinating forms. There is also a smartphone app with a fun quiz. Simply follow the droplet-shaped signs to find the way. At 33 kilometres from start to finish, the ride is relatively long and is therefore only suitable for children with a good level of fitness. The Wipprad bike shop in Steinach as well as the bike hire shop at the bottom of the Bergeralmbahn cable car rent out mountain bikes and e-bikes.

Trail description

The ride begins at the railway station in Steinach am Brenner. Head south for a bit, cross the bridge over the Sill river, turn right onto the main road and then immediately left again. Now continue on the Zirmweg and then take the Herrengschwendt road on the right. This goes down to the bottom station of the Bergeralm cable car, over the Gschnitzbach stream, under the motorway bridge and shortly afterwards back to the southern side of the stream. There, the trail climbs slightly on a forest path and then continues above the stream into the valley. Shortly before you reach the village of Trins, switch onto the other side of the stream again. If you want to make the detour to the Sarnthein waterfall, turn right at Pension Erika below Schneeberg Castle and continue past the forest cemetery to the main road. Opposite the car park, turn into Jubiläumsweg and follow the signs to the waterfall. As the last section of the path is not passable by bike, park it at the end of the road and lock it if necessary. After walking up to the waterfall, cycle back to the castle and continue up the valley along the Gschnitzbach stream. At the football pitch, cross the stream again and continue on the field path until the path leads into the forest again. At the St. Magdalena car park near the alpaca farm, cycle back to the north side of the stream and into Gschnitz. At the end of the village, take the bridge over the stream again and ride above in the forest to the last settlement in the valley. The final section follows the road for a while before you then reach your destination: the Gasthof Feuerstein inn next to the Mühlendorf (Mill Village). Take the same route back.
