Mountain Bike Safari Stage 08: Steinach am Brenner – Tulfes

When it comes to elevation gain (400m), this ride is quite pleasant. The easy to intermediate route starts with a mellow descent.

In total, this segment has a pedalled vertical drop of 1,000 meters. Tirol Bike Park atop Bergeralm in Steinach boasts two world class downhill trails with varying terrain for all abilities. From Matrei, the trail largely shares with the historic Roman Road which leads back to Wipptal Valley. This route runs round the foot of Patscherkofel, the iconic mountain of Tirol’s capital Innsbruck, and eventually leads to Tulfes, the destination end of this ride.

Trail description

Starting Point: Steinach am Brenner

From Steinach, a very short climb takes you to the base of Bergeralmbahn Gondola. Ride the gondola up to 1,600 meters with your bike.

From the top terminal, there are many switchbacks to negotiate, running eastwards in the beginning and then northwards towards Steinach where the route shares a short section with the previous segment. In Matrei, take the fork to the east that brings you onto the historic Roman Road. Take this road northwards. The route has a few climbs and runs round the foot of Patscherkofel Mountain. High above the Inntal Valley, the route turns in an easterly direction and eventually brings you to Tulfes.
