To the Source of the Isar River

In Scharnitz, hop on the spectacular 30-kilometer path that weaves along Isar River and through the extraordinary mountain scenery of Hinterautal Valley. The easy route gains 200 meters of elevation and takes some 3.5 hours to complete.

  • This remarkable cycle tour is part of the Isar Cycle Path und takes you to the source of the Isar River. The route crosses bridges and follows trails that are lined with interesting information panels.
  • Only three kilometers out of the source you will find quaint Kastenalm Alpine Pasture Hut (elev. 1,220 meters), which is encircled by the perpendicular rock walls of Laliderer Wände and jagged Gleirsch-Halltal Range.

Trail description

From the Karwendel Car Park in Scharnitz, ride toward Hinterautal Valley. A gentle climb takes you past Gasthof Wiesenhof Inn to Gleirschhöhe. From there, it’s a gentle ride to the source of the Isar River. The same route brings you back to the trailhead at Scharnitz.
