Trail description

Trailhead is the car park at Matrei Tauernhaus Lodge. Strap on your snowshoes and walk down to Tauernbach Brook where you might be cheered by encounters with the Water Ouzel, a tiny passerine that is as well called the White-throated Dipper. This smallest of avian divers is able to dive and swim underwater for up to one minute. Nestled amongst alder and willow trees, you’ll walk on the right hand side of Tauerntal Valley. A short climb brings you to a viewpoint from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of the scenic surroundings. Soon you will reach Wohlgemuth Alpine Pasture Village (which is only settled during the warm summer months). This is a wonderful place to pause for a rest, relax and refuel with snacks and a thermos of hot cocoa or tea—and for winter wildlife watching; be sure to bring binoculars or a telephoto lens to enhance viewing. The loop brings you back to Matrei Tauernhaus Lodge along sunny slopes or the wintry hiking trail. The lodge with its quaint timber-panelled parlour makes an ideal post-trek warming spot.

Please Note: Be prepared to adjust your activity based on current conditions. As a general rule, if there is fresh snow, conditions may be better suited for snowshoeing; if the snow is old and well-travelled, it may be better for winter walking. For avalanche conditions visit lawine.tirol.gv.at.
