The church tower is a defining feature of Mutters’ townscape.

Description

The parish church in Mutters is dedicated to St Nicholas and was first mentioned in 1327. After falling into disrepair in the 15th century, it was rebuilt and extended in the early 16th century. A village fire in 1727 severely damaged the tower and roof, following which the church was redesigned in the Baroque style and subsequently renovated on several occasions. The sundial on the south side of the tower bears an inscription dating from 1736; it was presumably restored around 1760 by Peter Anich and Josef Anton Zoller.
Of its Gothic predecessor, the Baroque-style church retains only the sacristy portal. Particularly noteworthy are the rich frescoes by Anton and Josef Anton Zoller, the late Baroque high altar with its image of grace, and other furnishings such as the pulpit, baptismal font, Stations of the Cross and stained-glass windows.
To this day, as a listed landmark, it characterises the townscape of Mutters.
