Attraction Natters Parish Church

A historic landmark in the western low mountain range.

Description

The parish church of Natters stands on high ground to the east of the village and is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.
It was first mentioned in a document as early as 1376 and is therefore one of the historically significant churches in the western low mountain range.
Following a fire in 1449, the chancel was consecrated in 1451, and the nave was later extended.
The building displays late Gothic features, but was given a Baroque makeover around 1770 and its interior was redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.
The beautifully painted tower is particularly striking.
On the tower is a sundial dating from 1759, designed by Peter Anich and painted by Josef Anton Zoller. The church is surrounded by a cemetery and, with its elevated position, dominates the townscape of Natters.
Inside is a Neo-Gothic high altar by Seraf Eberhart, dating from 1887. Also noteworthy is the late-Gothic crucifix group from around 1480, which was later incorporated into the altar.
