At 1845 m above sea level, on the front edge of a small valley basin, which is characterised by a diverse flora, with numerous rare and protected plants, such as the bearded bellflower, St John's wort, the lousewort, the alpine helmet, the mosquito orchid, the sheath cotton grass, the bedstraw, the alpine pasque flower, the purple spotted orchid, the single-headed piglet orchid, various orchids and rarities such as the burnt orchid or the globe orchid, the Kolmhaus is almost like a fairytale landscape.
The fact that this diversity exists is thanks to the Brandberg farmers, who until a few decades ago used the areas around the Kolmhaus as mountain mowing fields and thus protected a valuable cultural landscape from scrub encroachment. Even today, there is still cultivated land near the hut that has been maintained by farmers. The environmental department of the province of Tyrol promotes the preservation of these valuable areas.
