In the 1930s, three buildings were constructed at Marchkinkele to accommodate border soldiers. At the same time, the military road was also built. The brothers Albin and Andreas Innerhofer purchased the three barracks below the summit of Marchkinkele at an altitude of 2,545 meters a few years ago from the autonomous province of South Tyrol and – as there is no accommodation in the immediate vicinity – took on the construction of a shelter for the many hikers and mountain bikers. Now, since the beginning of summer 2021, guests can enjoy a new shelter with a dining room, traditional cuisine, and sleeping accommodations. Marchkinkele is a popular destination for hikers and ski tourers, as well as mountain bikers and e-bikers in the upper Puster Valley and Villgraten Valley. The March Hut is also located on the "Stoneman Trail." It is integrated into the Heart-Ass hiking tours of Villgraten Valley and the Toblach High Trail. In addition, a stage of the pilgrimage route "High and Holy" passes over Marchkinkele. The hike to March Hut from the pilgrimage church in Kalkstein is a lovely day trip.
