Hike with superb views from Wilder Kaiser
Starting point is Griesner Alm. Hike up past Wildanger Hütte to Eggersteig trail, the start of this hike’s most difficult but also most scenic part. The famous Eggersteig crosses over the Wilder Kaiser via an improbable route between two vertical limestone walls. Although this route involves narrow ledges, climbing ladders and cables, it is possible to do it without via ferrata equipment. The last portion is the mighty Steinerne Rinne, an old glacial cirque above which vertical walls are towering on both sides. The trail to the summit on Ellmauer Tor (1981 m) is steep with a few cable passages. The way down to Gaudeamushütte is through loose scree. A hiking trail takes you to Wochenbrunner Alm.
NOTE:
If you still have some energy left and are looking to “bag a peak”, you can continue from Ellmauer Tor to Hintere Goinger Halt (2192 m). Hiking time from the saddle is approx. 50 minutes. This hike involves some scrambling - tackle it only if you are sure-foot and have a good head for heights.
