Beautiful circular hike in the Waldrast adventure kingdom at over 1,600m.
From the starting point at the car park of the Maria Waldrast monastery inn, head south to the start of the trail. Then walk downhill along the edge of the forest next to the cross-country ski trail, through sparse forest and meadows, then uphill again a little. The trail leads in a curve to the Ochsenalm and from there to the road to Maria Waldrast. Finally, walk a short distance up the road to the Maria Waldrast monastery inn, where you can stop for a leisurely meal.
Take the S-Bahn to Matrei. There is an inexpensive transfer from the railway station in Matrei to Maria Waldrast in winter. The timetable is available online at www.wipptal.at/fahrplaene under the ski bus schedule. By car: Leave the A13 Brenner motorway at Matrei and drive along the main road through Matrei to the northern end of the village. Turn off there for Mützens/Mühlbachl and follow the road (toll road € 5) to the Klostergasthof. Attention: Chains are compulsory in winter!
