Multi-day hikes from hut to hut, towering 3,000m summit ascents and cross-border adventures into Italy make the Wipptal Valley between the Stubai Alps and the Tux Alps a haven for walkers and hikers. The flora and fauna in this region of Tirol is particularly diverse.
The many side valleys branching off the Wipptal Valley are the starting point for numerous summit ascents and multi-day hikes. The Gschnitztal Hut Hike, for example, leads past many mountain lakes, through flower-filled meadows and across boulder-strewn slopes. Experienced hikers with good fitness levels and a head for heights can explore the Tribulaun mountains on the Austrian-Italian border. The Valsertal Valley is also a popular starting point for walks and hikes, for example stage one of the Peter Habeler Loop comprising seven stages in the western Zillertal Alps. One of the most iconic peaks en route is the Olperer, which towers over the Hintertux Glacier at 3,476 metres above sea level. Families with children will find easier routes further down in the valley. Two recommendations are the walks to the Obernberger See lake and the buggy-friendly trail to the Laponesalm hut.
