Attraction Kufstein Fortress

Open today
Kufstein

The Kufstein Fortress towers above the Tyrolean district capital of Kufstein as an unmissable landmark and bears witness to Kufstein's turbulent past as a border town between Tyrol and Bavaria. Today, the fortress is an impressive backdrop for the Operetta Summer.

We recommend because:

  • the fortress was first mentioned as early as 1205
  • Since 1931, the world's largest open-air organ has been in the fortress tower.
  • the panorama train takes you up the fortress hill in comfort.

Description

The Kufstein Fortress, located just above the town, is the landmark of the 20,000-inhabitant community by the green Inn. The fortress was first mentioned around 1205 AD when it was owned by the bishops of Regensburg. Gradually, the fortress became a powerful complex and has been in the possession of the city of Kufstein since 1924. With a varied program for culture and history enthusiasts, Kufstein Fortress is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Alpine region.

One of the attractions at the fortress is the Hero Organ, which, with its 4,307 pipes, is the largest outdoor organ in the world. The organ performance, which is meant to commemorate the fallen of the two world wars, can be heard across the entire town at noon. Other highlights at the fortress include the local history museum, the former prison tower in the Emperor's Tower, an underground rock passage, an herb garden, special exhibitions, and much more.

During the day, the gates of Kufstein Fortress are open to all guests with or without a guided tour. However, at night, the gates are locked, unless you are with the travel pirate Bettina Gründhammer. On selected dates, she conquers the castle with you.

By flashlight, you will see the over 800-year-old fortress with completely different eyes. Discover the tumultuous history of the fortress in the dark, marvel at the details of the ancient walls, and secure a spot in one of the night tours with the certified tour guide Bettina Gründhammer.
