Vitalberg Museum of the Tirolean Stone Oil

Pertisau

Located on the shores of Achensee Lake, the village of Pertisau is the historical center of the Tirolean rock oil industry. The “Glassy Mountain” named Vitalberg (literally ‘Mountain of Vitality’) houses the Stone Oil Museum where visitors can trace the history of mining oil shale deposits in Karwendel Mountain Range. Step back in time and learn about the fascinating story of Tirol's shale oil industry at Martin’s Shaft. An interactive audio system and a multi-media show tell you all about the “Black Gold of Achensee Lake” and explain fascinating discoveries like an 8000-year-old stone hammer and equipment from the early days of rock oil mining.
