In September, Axams and Mutters are rounding-up the sheep and cattle herds for the transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock between mountain and lowland pastures. An experience not to be missed!
It’s a time-honored tradition that never fails to impress: A river of sheep will be rolling down the mountain from their summer grazing pastures in Fotschertal Valley toward Axams on September 06, 2024, during the Transhumance, which is a type of pastoralism, a seasonal movement of livestock between fixed summer and winter pastures in mountainous regions. Bells are clanking, nervous ewes baaing and 4,000 hooves clicking down the road and parading through the village during the big sheep drive. Each year, the return of the cattle to their winter quarters down in the valley is reason for a huge celebration in Axams: This year, the Cattle Drive will take place on September 07, 2024. Festivities include a performance given by the “Axams Kirchtagsschnöller” folklore group. Another worthwhile experience is celebrated in the neighboring village of Mutters on September 14, 2024, where the lovingly decorated cows parade down from Lärchenwald Forest into the village along Nockhofweg Trail.
