The many things that make us – Homo sapiens – different from any other species is the theme of the “You are unique!” exhibition at Audioversum in Innsbruck.
What is it that makes humans unique? Ever since we learned to write, we have documented how special we are. Why are we the only human species still alive today whereas many of our early-human ancestors went extinct?
When you pull together our unparalleled language skills, our ability to infer others' mental states and our instinct for cooperation, you have something unprecedented.
Us. Homo sapiens.
Still, as far as we know, we are the only creatures trying to understand where we came from. We also peer further back in time, and further into the future, than any other species. What other species would think to ponder the age of the universe, or how it will end?
The very fact that we as human beings can write and read and contemplate the unique nature of our mental abilities is awe-inspiring. Such self-reflective consciousness or ‘meta-wondering’ boosts our ability for self-transformation, both as individuals and as a species. It contributes to our abilities for self-monitoring, self-recognition and self-identification.
The dimensions of the human body are in the center of attention at this special exhibition which is on display at Audioversum in Innsbruck until March 31, 2023.
