Krampus processions also have a long and proud tradition in Rattenberg, officially the smallest town in Austria. On 6 December devilish Krampuses and scary witches parade through the medieval oldtown in a spectacular show.
Rhythmic drumming on old fuel canisters, fearsome fire-breathers, horned devils and dancing witches are all key parts of the Krampus processions in the small town of Rettenberg. This loud, wild and spectacular show draws visitors from near and far every year. The celebrations begin this year at 17:00 with the arrival of the Krampuses in the town centre. After parading through the streets, they create circles of fire which, according to legend, drive away the evil spirits of winter.
