KiS – Kunst in Seefeld art and exhibition center is proud to present portraits by Andy Warhol at the old fire station of Seefeld from June through September.
Andy Warhol is widely recognised as one of the most significant artists of the late twentieth century, and Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century is, arguably, among his most important paintings. KiS – Kunst in Seefeld is proud to announce this exhibition of Andy Warhol’s ten “Jewish genius” paintings from 1980, which depict renowned luminaries of Jewish culture.
Andy Warhol was a famous artist popular in the early 1960’s to 1980’s. He began his career as an ad illustrator and became a leading artist. Warhol received praise for his early work and was considered a pivotal figure in pop art. Pop Art used images from mass media and materials from commercial production as inspiration for a new style of art. Many know Andy Warhol for his trendy pop art. His Campbell’s soup cans brought the advertising and art worlds together. His use of Marilyn Monroe’s image stood out as iconic. But he created many portraits. In particular, Warhol turned away from contemporary culture in the series Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century. The idea for this collection came from Warhol’s art dealer, Ron Feldman in 1979. He suggested about 100 Jewish men and women for Warhol to highlight. In many talks, they decided to portray a pantheon of ten great Jewish thinkers, politicians, performers, musicians, and writers, including Sigmund Freud, Sarah Bernhardt, Golda Meir, and the Marx Brothers. Warhol’s iconic portraits attest to the lasting achievements and fame of these singular figures.
The KiS – Kunst in Seefeld art and exhibition center has devoted its third exhibition to a display of the Warhol Series, ”Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century” (on view at the old fire station of Seefeld until September 25, 2022). The paintings are a remarkable achievement and in many ways represent a peak in Warhol's oeuvre. Magisterial in conception, they advance a new subtlety and sophistication in technical terms. One of their most compelling aspects is the way surface and image are held in a satisfying and fascinating dialogue, generating new depths of meaning and implication.
