Matrei in Osttirol – Glocknerhaus Kals

On this splendid tour Austria's highest mountain accompanies you at every turn. Wonderful insights and panoramic vistas of lovely Virgental Valley and glacier-capped peaks of Venediger Mountains add to a memorable experience for passionate hiking fans.

  • Indulge in the stunning views of Großglockner Peak all day long. You can make out Austria's tallest mountain at 3,798 meters above sea level as soon as you reach the top station of Goldriedbahn.
  • From here picture-book Virgental Valley seems to be only a stone's throw away, as well as the mighty glacier fields of Venediger Mountains. Another vantage point can be found in the area surrounding Kals-Matreier-Törl.
  • Following the Panorama Trail between Kals-Matreier-Törl and the Blauspitz top station, varied information boards providing information on high alpine fauna and flora are on display. Next to Gasthaus Glocknerblick inn a wonderful herb and flower trail was installed in order to inform hikers about the local vegetation.
  • The Gothic-style parish church of Kals, consecrated to Saint Rupert, is always worth a visit. The church belongs to Austria's oldest parish buildings dating back to Charlemagne's empire in the 8th/9th century.
  • This hiking route of intermediate difficulty (red trail) is suitable for children from 8 years.

Trail description

Starting at the National Park House in Matrei, cross the village down to Goldried Base Terminal and ride the cable car to Goldried Top Terminal. Follow the signs saying “Europa-Panoramaweg” and leave the dirt road shortly afterwards changing onto a singletrack track on the right (“Zum Goldriedsee”). When reaching the fork, make a left and follow the signposts “Zum Goldriedsee” (the lake nestles in a hidden hollow). Walk back along the same route and head down to the clearly visible panoramic trail at the first opportunity. Proceed along a dirt road, barely ascending and descending, towards Kals-Matreier-Törl snack bar. Continue on a singletrack trail/ footpath in the direction of “Bergbahnen Kals, Panoramaweg Nr. 26”, walking across meadows at virtually the same altitude towards Großglockner Mountain before the route takes you slightly upwards. When reaching a fork, follow the signs to “Panoramarestaurant Blauspitz”. At the next fork, head downwards to now visible Blauspitz Top Terminal. From here, the trail zigzags its way down through the ski area (intermediate terminal). The route continues along a dirt road on or right next to the slope in the direction of Gedächtniskapelle Chapel visible from afar. Just before the chapel, branch off right (“Mittelstation Bergbahnen”) and walk past the sacred building following the signpost. Take the singletrack trail back to the slope towards Glocknerblick On-Mountain Restaurant. From there, a gentle stroll along the road takes you to the hamlet of Großdorf where you cross Kalser Bach Brook and head south following the main road to the parish church. The adjacent building, Glocknerhaus Kals, houses the Hohe Tauern National Park Visitor’s Center.
