One of the very few alpine farms with no forest road access: Mauchelealm near Neugasteig in Stubaital can only be accessed via a steep mountain trail. A signpost en-route reads (in German) “You have overcome the worst of it, but still have to suffer a little more”. The “suffering”, however, is quickly forgotten as soon as the forest starts to thin out, an imposing hawk comes into view and a carpet of alpine roses around the Mischbachalm spreads out ahead. You can’t even see the quaint wooden cabin and shingle roof of the Mischbachalm at first, because it is tucked away in the mountain terrain. Once there, hikers can look forward to magnificent alpine landscapes, in addition to freshly baked bread from a wood-fired oven and great cakes made by the mountain hut landlady, Gertrud, as well as delicious homemade blueberry and pinecone schnapps.
