One Day Trek: Rofan Range – Gschöllkopf Peak

This awesome, 3-kilometer long one day trek of moderate difficulty provides million dollar views of Achensee Lake, the largest lake in Tirol. One of the finest viewing outposts, the spectacular “Adlerhorst” (‘Eyrie’), a 360 degree viewing platform atop 2,039-metre Gschöllkopf Peak, will leave your head spinning as you try to identify a seemingly infinite array of peaks spread out before you: from close-ups of Karwendel Range and the Zillertal and Stubai Alps all the way to Hohe Tauern Range. Departing from the top terminal of Rofan Gondola, this enjoyable 1.5 hour hike gains 200 meters and loses 200 meters and is also suitable for less experienced walkers. You will find lovely on-mountain eateries next to the top of Rofan Gondola, where you will be warmly welcomed with hearty Tirolese delicacies. Rofan Mountain Inn, for example, boasts a sunny outdoor patio from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of Achensee Lake and lofty peaks around every corner.

Trail description

From Maurach, Rofan Gondola conveniently whisks you up to the heart of Rofan Mountain Range. From the top terminal, walk past Mauritz Alpine Pasture Hut on your way to a mountain saddle. Take the left fork and climb tussock slopes and pine dwarf fields to reach the summit of Gschöllkopf with its spectacular “Adlerhorst” (Eyrie), a 360 degree viewing platform. The trail is excellent and “Gschöllkopf” signed with yellow blazes. Retrace your steps and take the same way back to get to the gondola’s top terminal.

Strongly Recommended: At Rofan, opposite to the top of Rofan Gondola, you can get an eagle's eye view of the mountains at the Eagle View Overlook, a special sightseeing telescope viewer that offers breathtaking 360° views of the surrounding ranges.
