Description

On this tour, you cycle with a child trailer through the Hinterautal valley in the Karwendel Nature Park from Scharnitz to Kastenalm – including a refreshment stop and several highlights along the way: the Holzerhütte museum, a nature adventure playground, the Stoanmandl stone stacking site on the Isar, and the source of the Isar itself.

Four experience stops along the route:

  • Holzerhütte Museum (at the starting point) – a historic log cabin from the Gleirschtal valley, once used as accommodation by woodworkers. Today it features a multimedia exhibition about the history and present of forestry, the everyday life of woodworkers past and present, and the ecological connections and biodiversity of the local mountain forests.
  • Nature adventure playground Scharnitz (at the starting point) – a balance park made of stacked logs leading into a climbing tower. Children can run and play freely, explore a small rock cave, and enjoy a slide accessed via a stone staircase. There are also water features, fountains, seating areas, and a large basket swing. Nearby is also the Auweg playground with a sandpit and additional play equipment for younger children. A small play hut offers toys for borrowing.
  • Stoanmandl on the Isar (before the river source) – a traditional spot where visitors can build stone stacks (“Stoanmandl”) and skip stones on the river.
  • Source of the Isar – a resting point at the river springs with information about the valley and the river.

You start at the Karwendel Nature Park information centre in Scharnitz or at the nearby parking area, where the museum and playground are also located. The route begins on a low-traffic, paved municipal road for the first 1.5 km. Shortly before the Isarlodge Wiesenhof, it turns into a forest track through the Hinterautal valley.

From the start to the Gleirschhöhe, the trail climbs steadily over roughly 3 km – the only more continuous ascent on the route. From there onward, the path continues with a gentle inclinedirectly alongside the Isar, framed by the mountains of the Karwendel range.

Before reaching the river source, you pass the Stoanmandl site along the Isar. After about three-quarters of the route, you reach the Isar source with a rest area and informational boards. About 10 minutes further on, you park your bike and walk the final 500 metres to Kastenalm – the tour’s refreshment stop, located in a meadow area.

The return follows the same route back to the starting point. In grazing areas, livestock may be present – please keep distance and pass through calmly and without stopping.

Variant: starting from Seefeld
The tour can also start in Seefeld via a connecting route to Scharnitz. This makes the ride significantly longer than starting directly in Scharnitz. This variant also includes the Bodenalm as an additional refreshment stop.
