We love them, these lesser-known, sometimes underrated insider tip hikes. Here's one of them.
Basically an easy ridge hike over the Kugelwand and Harauspitze. However, surefootedness is required in places on short, narrow and steeper sections. The hike often runs through forests, but there are always views of the gentle Chiemgau Alps, Lake Walchsee and the rugged Kaiser Mountains. Beautiful viewing benches along the way. Another plus point: there are three mountain huts along the trail with long seasonal opening times.
Hiking trail, forest road, forest path
The starting point is at the soccer field parking lot. Take the forest trail toward Ottenalm/Riederalm; from there, take the right fork and walk past the Eisengattern—first on a wide forest trail, then on a slightly steeper forest hiking trail—until you reach the Kugelwand. A detour to the scenic bench is well worth it! The view of Walchsee, the town of the same name, and the Zahmer Kaiser is breathtaking! The trail continues to wind its way over the mountain ridge through the mixed forest all the way to the Harauerspitze. After a few steps, you’ll see the exit from the Kaiserwinkl Climbing Arena on the left. At the intersection, turn left and take the descent down steep steps—secured for a short stretch by a wire rope—to the Ottenalm (place to stop for refreshments). Follow the forest road, past the Riederalm (place to stop for refreshments), back to the starting point.
