Description

From the lift car park in Hochfügen, the path leads past the playground, over a wooden bridge and onto a gravelly forest track. Passing St Michael’s Chapel, it winds its way uphill through the forest along switchbacks of varying steepness. Once on the forest track, the path branches off to the right towards the Machentalalm (unmanned) and continues to the Loassattel at 1,675 m. Through sunny, treeless terrain and shady sections of woodland, past alpine roses and streams, the high-altitude trail – which is narrow in places but not exposed – leads up to the Gartalm. The 400-year-old alpine hut is well worth a visit and still bears traces of the silver mining era. A true natural gem! The return route takes us to the Gartalm Niederleger. Turn right there and follow the footpath to the Machentalalm Niederleger. From there, take the forest road back towards Hochfügen.
