Description

Spartan emergency shelter in the mountains
Austrian Alpine Club, Lienz Division

The Gernot-Röhr-Biwak enjoys a remote location high in the Schober Mountains. Walkers and hikers crossing over the Kesselkeessattel ridge between the Elberfelder Hütte and the Lucknerhaus will pass this wood-and-metal building which has enough space for eight people. It is designed for emergecies so the amenities are very basic: there are no cooking facilities and there is no heating. From the refuge it takes around half an hour to reach the Böses Weibl, a peak towering over 3,000 metres into the sky. The young members of the Lienz Division of the Austrian Alpine Club built this shelter in 1973 and named it after the famous mountaineer Gernot Röhr, who was killed in a tragic accident while climbing in the Lienz Dolomites.
