PARKPLATZ SENNHOF->Klein Horlachalalm->Finstertaler Sennhütte->HOCHREICHKOPF
Please note the current snow and avalanche report for the coming days: https://lawinen.report/bulletin/latest
Avalanche danger scale
1 (LOW) Avalanche release is only possible at heavy additional load on very few, extreme steep slopes. Spontaneous avalanches (so-called slides) are not expected. Generally safe conditions.
2 (MODERATE) Avalanche release is likely at heavy additional load especially on the indicated steep slopes. Larger avalanches are not expected. The snowpack is generally well consolidated, except on some steep slopes. Cautious route choice on the indicated steep slopes and slope aspects.
3 (CONSIDERABLE) Avalanche release is likely already at low additional load especially on the indicated steep slopes. Occasionally some medium, occasionally even large avalanches are possible spontaneously. The snowpack on many steep slopes is only moderately to weakly consolidated. Experience in avalanche assessment is necessary. Avoid indicated steep slopes and slope aspects as much as possible.
4 (HIGH) Avalanche release is possible already at low additional load especially on the indicated steep slopes. Occasionally many medium, sometimes even large avalanches occur. On many steep slopes the snowpack is only weakly consolidated. Route selection should be restricted to moderately steep terrain and avalanche runout zones must be considered. Extensive experience in avalanche assessment is necessary.
5 (VERY HIGH) Numerous large avalanches, also on moderately steep terrain, are expected spontaneously. At this warning level, safe operation in ski areas is no longer possible. The snowpack is generally weakly consolidated and unstable. Avoid touring is recommended.
The "standard ski touring equipment" consists of ski touring skis with touring bindings, telescopic poles, climbing skins, crampons, digital avalanche transceiver, avalanche shovel, avalanche probe, first aid kit, and a mobile phone. A backpack with appropriate contents should be carried, including spare clothing, sun protection, cold protection, provisions, and enough to drink! For overnight stays in huts, don't forget to bring hygiene items and a hut sleeping bag!
For glacier crossings: a "complete glacier equipment" consists of harnesses, two prusik loops or ascenders of different lengths, two HMS carabiners, ice axe, crampons, and a rope.
The ascent starts from the Parkplatz Sennhof (next to the information point) in Niederthai along the Horlachtalweg (7 km) towards the Schweinfurter Hütte. After the Klein Horlachalm (1,900 m), the path leads left uphill over the first slope to the Finstertaler Sennhütte (2,147 m). From there, follow the valley floor and choose the ascent through the eastern basin directly to the summit. Finally, you reach the summit ridge (with ski depot) and follow it to the highest point, the Hochreichkopf (3,010 m).
Travel comfortably and safely by train to the Ötztal train station. The final stop or exit point is the ÖTZTAL station. After that, you can conveniently and quickly travel through the entire valley to your desired destination using public transportation or local taxi services!
