Among all the famous mountains, huts and valleys in the Zillertal Alps, the "Gunggl" is often overlooked. Wrongly so - the small high valley near Ginzling is a real beauty and home to one of the most rustic mountain huts in Tyrol.
From Ginling, the well-marked hut trail leads through shady forests to the entrance of the "Gunggl" high valley. Along the Gungglbach stream, the terrain becomes more open and the rustic Maxhütte appears. The former hunting lodge (built in 1823) is situated on beautiful alpine terrain and is ideal for families due to the relatively short ascent. We also recommend spending the night at the hut and continuing the tour the next day in the direction of the Berliner Hütte or Greizer Hütte in order to return to the starting point from there. Sure-footedness and a basic head for heights are important for these crossings.
Follow signpost No. 522 towards "Maxhütte, 1.445 m," located on the left side of Schlegeis Straße, until you reach a narrow and rocky path. Follow this path through the forest and cross the bridge in the final meters, leading you to your destination, the Maxhütte.
The cozy Maxhütte in the wildly romantic "Gunggltal" is a popular family hike. The path leads uphill, mostly through the forest, over rough terrain. The Maxhütte was once a hunting lodge, built by Prince Franz Josef von Auersperg.
