Hiking trail, hiking path with a ladder and a rope to hold onto, gravel path
Start in Kössen at the valley station of the Kössen mountain railways, following the Wiesenweg trail that branches off to the east. After a few minutes’ walk through the woods, the trail ascends in long, easy-to-hike switchbacks past a gate to the Scheibenwaldhütte (staffed). From there, continue on to the Bärenhütte (staffed, paragliding launch site) and the Gipfelhaus. From there, it’s about another half hour along a well-marked mountain trail to the Unterberghorn. The return trip can be made either via the same route, by gondola, or through the Niederhausertal valley (not when wet!!). For sure-footed hikers with a head for heights and a good sense of direction. At the shoulder just before the summit, head steeply south through mountain pine groves, along an exposed section secured by a wire rope around a secondary summit, and continue south along the ridge through sparse forest and across mountain pastures to the Lackalm (staffed). Here, turn right onto a forest road, through the Niederhausertal valley to the Lucknerhof; just before it, turn right back to the starting point.
