Snowshoeing & Winter Walking in East Tirol

Home to the Hohe Tauern National Park, this area near the Italian border is ideal for hikers and snowshoeing enthusiasts.

In search of peace and quiet on holiday? Then look no further than the region of East Tirol! Experienced rangers are available to show you the best spots in the region to observe chamois, ibex, foxes and eagles in their natural habitat.

The Hochstein mountain overlooking the town of Lienz is home to the Osttirodler, a mountain rollercoaster open all year round. Don’t forget to try some of the local produce such as dried bacon, tangy cheese, wholemeal bread and traditional dumplings – incredibly tasty and a great way to re-fuel with energy for your next adventure in the mountains!

Tip! Since 2018 East Tirol has been home to Austria's first winter hiking village: Kartitsch in the Gailtal Valley. With its traditional farmhouses and fabulous mountain backdrop, this charming village in East Tirol's highest valley is the ideal setting for a peaceful winter break. It offers ten clearly signposted and well-maintained trails in the winter months. Visitors staying in one of the official winter hiking accommodation providers can borrow rucksacks, hiking poles and warm cushions from their hosts, who will also be happy to give advice on the best hikes and huts in the region. IN March 2022 also the European Winter Walking Days in East Tirol will take place in Kartitsch. Information: East Tirol tourism board +43.50.212212, info@osttirol.com, www.osttirol.com
