Attraction Swedish chapel near the Klausenbach

Kirchberg

The Swedish Chapel at Klausenbach is the destination of the annual Antlass procession, which commemorates the averted threat from Swedish riders in 1643.

Description

The chapel at Klausenbach, better known as the "Swedish Chapel," is the annual destination of the Antlass procession.

Above the entrance door of the little church is the inscription: "Thus far and no further came the Swedish riders – 1643."

During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the region faced multiple threats of a Swedish invasion. However, the troops never advanced to Klausenbach. Armed riders from the communities of Kirchberg, Brixen, and Westendorf are said to have ridden out together with a priest carrying the Holy Sacrament to confront the Swedes and force them to turn back.

As a thank you for averting this danger, an annual riders' procession to the Klausen Chapel was established.
