Wonderful round tour in front of the shapely backdrop of the Tribulaune on the border crest between Obernberg- and Gschnitztal.
The tour starts at the beginning of the village of Gschnitz, below the small pilgrimage church of St. Magdalena, majestically enthroned high above the rock. Passing this, the path first leads in to the Martairalm and from there up to the Wildgrube, which lies below mighty rocky outcrops. The area around the Martairalm is very quiet and little used, perhaps one reason why the bizarre, untouched beauty of the local nature is so intensively perceived. From the basin of the Wildgrube it is not far to the Muttenjoch, the passage to Obernberg. From here the path changes to the southern side of the common ridge of the Gschnitz and Obernberg valleys and leads below the Muttenkopf and Kreuzjöchl against the backdrop of the shapely Tribulaune to the Gstreinjöchl, the highest point of the tour. Hiking on this probably most beautiful section of the tour, in the sunshine high above the valley floor, through beautiful alpine meadows and past steep rock faces is a unique experience even for experienced mountaineers. At the Gstreinjöchl there is once again a wonderful view, Habicht, Pflerscher Tribulaun and the glaciers of the Wilden Freiger become visible. Also the Tribulaun hut, 500 hm further down, smiles up and is looking forward to hungry visitors. The descent to this hut through a steep, serpentine path is a bit difficult, but you will be rewarded with great food and friendly hosts. Last but not least, the descent via Vordersanders to the bottom of the Gschnitz valley and from there back to the car.
DIRECTIONS
From the parking lot "St. Magdalena" you first pass a farmhouse and then a small piece of the valley. After a few metres you come to a signpost that points to a beautifully laid out path that leads to the mountainside. The path gets steeper and steeper and finally leads after about 100 m to the wide pilgrim path (no. 52) coming from Trins with its beautifully designed pilgrim stations. The path now climbs slightly, passing the turnoff to the little pilgrimage church and continuing into the valley, following the path with no. 126 (and 38) towards Martairalm. Leaving the forest, you reach it in the form of a small rock shelter, in front of which there is a fountain with great water. From here the path leads in serpentines up the left steep mountain flank to a first basin, the so-called Rossgrube. Below a rock face the path continues in an arc to the Wildgrube and from there to the Muttejoch. After a rest, you have to descend a little from the Muttejoch until you reach a crossroads. Here the high trail coming from the Nösslachjoch, No. 94, meets the descent trail to Obernberg. On the former, the path now alternates at a constant height and leads into the valley towards the Tribulaunen. There are also some slightly steeper parts to master - but with some alpine experience these should not be a problem. After some time of gentle walking, the last crisp ascent to Gstreinjöchl is to be mastered after reaching the ascent path from Hinterenns. The signposting also changes here - now you are on the Max Dellantoni Steig with the no. 127. From the Gstreinjöchl it goes down again quite steeply to the Tribulaunhütte and from there over a nicely arranged path over Vordersanders back to the Gschnitztal to the Mühlendorf and GH Feuerstein. The way back to the starting point at the beginning of the village is best done by bus due to the vastness of the tour. Otherwise, there is also a great field path near the stream for this last section.
TIP OF THE AUTHOR
For those interested in art and old crafts, the ascent to the Martairalm has something very special to offer. Here you can marvel at and examine some of the lovingly and detailed Stations of the Cross, which lead up to the small pilgrimage church of St. Magdalena.
A stop at the friendly host of the Tribulaunhütte is a special treat after the effort of the ascent.
