The view from the Geier is just as breathtaking as a rest stop at the picturesque Junssee.
Correct footwear (sole with a tread, firm hiking shoes)
Clothing (quickly drying, protection against wind, rain and cold)
Sunscreen – ATTENTION: strong sunlight in the mountains! Sunglasses, head protection, sunscreen with a high sun protection factor
First aid kit (gauze bandage, plaster)
Charged mobile phone
Drinks and food (drink plenty of fluid on hikes – but avoid alcohol!)
From the bus stop, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the Tuxer Mühle, a fascinating piece of rural heritage dating back to 1839. From there, we can take a shortcut along the road through the forest before the trail eventually joins the forest path, which leads us leisurely first to the Niederleger and then to the Hochleger of the Junsbergalm. There, you’ll find the Stoankasern mountain cheese dairy, the last remaining one in the Zillertal. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a break, and you absolutely must try one of their cheese specialties!
Refreshed, we continue our hike toward Junssee/Geier, where we’re watched by numerous marmots just past the alpine pasture. Trail No. 35 leads us over a few small elevation changes, with the imposing Kalkwand and Torwand massifs looming ahead, to the Toten Böden, a magnificent viewing plateau. At the fork in the trail, we keep to the right and soon see a steep, grassy slope, which we climb in a few switchbacks. Once there, a sign from the Wattener Lizum military training area awaits us, reminding us not to leave the marked trails. Now a short rocky ascent with a brief rope section lies ahead, and then we’ve reached it: the picturesque Junssee. Before we follow the path to the Geier, a short detour to the shore is almost a must (Caution: swimming only suitable for cold-water enthusiasts). On the way to the summit, we first reach a pass where we turn left and, after a few minutes, reach the Geier (2,857 m). Here, a breathtaking view opens up of the surrounding mountain ranges, such as the Zillertal and Tux Alps, the Karwendel, and the Stubai Alps. Those who wish to resume hiking descend a short distance toward the pass and then keep left (Trail No. 02A) toward the Lizumer Hut. The path starts out steep but becomes increasingly easier as we approach the mountain hut (2,019 m), which soon comes into view in the Lizumer Böden. There, we reached our destination for the day and can now enjoy all the amenities of this ÖAV Hall Section mountain hut with a clear conscience!
