Description

Learn unique facts about the Karwendel, the sycamore maple as a characteristic tree species, efforts to preserve the maple forest, alpine farming and the management of the Engalm in the past and present along this attractively designed and excellently prepared educational trail.

2,218 sycamore trees populate the Großer Ahornboden. The sycamore is the longest-lived and largest native maple species. It is said to have a wide variety of uses – the themed trail mentions cattle feed, maple syrup, wood processing and even sauerkraut.

By car:
- Take the A12 Achensee motorway exit, then the Achensee-Bundesstraße B181 to the Achenpass border crossing
- Cross the Bavarian border (307) to Sylvensteinsee, then turn left towards Vorderriss
- Turn left towards Hinterriss, continue along the toll road to DIE ENG Alpengasthof and Naturhotel
