Mountain hikes Pitztal Alpine Pasture Route

St. Leonhard im Pitztal / Ötztal Alps
Difficulty ratings: medium
Route length: 11.4 km
Duration: 5:30 h

The Tiefentalalm is one of our favorite alpine pastures. Why? Because it’s beautifully situated in the high valley below the Rofelewand and enchantingly landscaped with streams, alpine animal enclosures, and a wooden playground. But even in late fall, when the alpine pastures may already be closed, this hike through the golden larch forest—with panoramic views of the Kaunergrat and Geigenkamm—is absolutely beautiful.

Tour character

A scenic alpine pasture loop at mid-altitude on the Kaunergrat. Also highly recommended in the fall, thanks to the Tiefentalalm’s extended operating hours and the abundance of larch trees in the area. If snow conditions permit, you should definitely extend the loop to include the easily accessible peaks of Kreuzjoch and/or Rappenkopf. The views of the majestic Rofelewand are fantastic. You should definitely hike a bit further from the Tiefentalalm into the beautiful high valley at the foot of the Rofelewand and the Gsallkopf. The alpine pasture loop follows forest roads and typical forest trails. It’s well-suited for children. The Arzleralm and Neubergalm are also recommended as places to stop for a break.

Description

The hike begins at the starting point and leads up a moderately steep farm road to the Neubergalm. From there, a shaded hiking trail branches off to the left through the mixed forest to the idyllically situated Tiefentalalm. Behind the alpine pasture, the route continues to the left over a bridge and on to the Arzler Alm.

The descent can be made either via the farm road or via the forest trail to Scheibe. The route then leads comfortably back along the Pitze to the starting point in Eggenstall in about 30 minutes.
