This hike takes you through breathtaking scenery to the Kaunergrathütte, past rushing streams and steep slopes. The view of the peaks and the valley makes this hike unforgettable.
From the starting point, a trail that is wide at first leads to a very steep ascent through the forest to the
Plangeroßalpe. There, you must cross the stream twice. The trail continues at a moderate incline along the stream to the ascent to the second valley level, where the Cottbuser Höhenweg joins it. From there, follow the trail over loose scree to the final, very steep ascent to one of the highest huts in the Ötztal Alps, the Kaunergrathütte. The descent follows the same route. For experienced and fit hikers, there is an alternative descent route from the Kaunergrathütte via the Mittelberglesee to Trenkwald (extends the hike by about 2 hours)
Tip: From the Kaunergrathütte, it takes about 1 hour to ascend to the Plangeroßkopf (beautiful panoramic view)
Difficulty: moderate
Take the bus to Plangeroß; from there, follow the signs toward the Kaunergrathütte.
Parking lot for the Rüsselsheimer and Kaunergrath huts, located between the hamlets of Weißwald and Plangeroß.
