Easy, but longer circular hike from Matrei train station via Mühlen, St. Kathrein with castle chapel Aufenstein, the Bildungshaus St. Michael with Kraftsee and Pfons to Trautson Castle and back to Matrei.
The circular hike starts at the train station in Matrei. Through the underpass at the station you cross to the eastern side of the station and then walk a short distance south on a road until you meet the main road to Navis. There you cross a bridge and then follow the path to the right along the Sill River to the south (Wipptal Radweg 30). At the second bridge over the Sill you reach the road to the village of Mühlen. Here you follow the road in the direction of Navistal and then soon uphill to the little church St. Kathrein with the castle chapel Aufenstein from the 13th century. From the little church you continue along the road to the north until you meet the main road to Navis, which you cross and continue on the other side along the road. At the first junction you go up and in the first sharp right-hand bend the hiking trail (no. 14) starts in the direction of the Bildungshaus St. Michael with Kraftsee. There is also a nice café there, which is open Thu to Sun. Continue past the Bildungshaus on the driveway for a bit to the north, then branch off to the left and go downhill on the driveway to a beautiful chapel (St. Nicholas Church) on the side of the path, where the driveway branches off to the right to Pfons to the parish hall. After a while the suspension bridge becomes visible from above. Walk down the road and over the bridge to Matrei Trautson Castle.
From the castle area, continue along the road in the direction of Zieglstadl near Mühlbachl and Annaheim. Arrived at the Sill, cross the bridge of the provincial road to Pfons/Ellbögen and turn right at the "Altstadt Cafe" in front of the church into the alley. Here you follow the Wipptal Radweg 30 again along the railroad line past the equipment factory and along a narrow path to the Matrei secondary school. From here you can either go back the way you came along the Sill or go straight on over the bridge to the main road and then follow the main road along the sidewalk south to the train station. The house facades of Matrei are historically particularly worth seeing and beautifully designed. Several cafés and restaurants also invite you to stop here.
