Description

The circular hike starts at the railway station in Matrei. Through the subway at the station, cross to the eastern side of the station and then walk a short distance south along a road until you reach the main road to Navis. Cross a bridge and follow the road uphill for about 500m in a bend. After the bend, turn left immediately (entrance to the settlement). Approx. 200m further on, the hiking trail (no. 9) starts across meadows in the direction of Pfons. Before the next settlement begins, turn right and walk up the "Himmelsleiter", a somewhat steeper climb, and north (trail 9A) to Schöfens. At Schöfens, follow the roadways down to Pfons to the community. Soon the suspension bridge is already visible. Walk down along the road and over the bridge to Matrei Trautson Castle.

From the castle grounds, continue along the road towards Zieglstadl near Mühlbachl and Annaheim. When you reach the Sill, cross the bridge over the road to Pfons/Ellbögen and turn right into the alley at the "Altstadt Cafe" in front of the church. Here you follow the Wipptal Radweg 30' along the railway line past the equipment factory and along a narrow path to the Matrei secondary school. From here you can either go back the way you came along the Sill or go straight ahead over the bridge to the main road and then follow the main road along the pavement southwards to the railway station. The house facades of Matrei are historically particularly worth seeing and beautifully designed. Several cafés and restaurants also invite you to stop for a bite to eat.
