The Tiroler Steinöl hike takes you on a journey of discovery, following the historical footsteps of the shale oil miners in the Bächental valley in the Karwendel mountains in Tirol.
As you follow the Tiroler Steinöl themed trail, interpretive signs bring the past to life, showing how miners made their way from Lake Achensee to the remote Bächental valley and hauled the extracted shale oil back with great effort.
The tour starts at the car park of the Christlum lifts and leads you through the Unterautal valley to the Gröben Alm (not serviced, ca. 2 hours walking time). From there, the trail continues up to the Gröbner Hals (1,654 metres) before finally descending to the Tiroler Steinöl distillery in the Bächental valley (1,375 metres). The return is via the same route.
Take the regional bus (line 4080 or 390) to Achenkirch and get off the bus at "Achenkirch Christlumlifte" stop.
